General Information |
Cordoba
is some people's favorite Spanish city, they go to visit the
Mezquita, once the largest mosque in the world, and still incredibly
powerful. It is a tremendous inclosed space, sadly broken by
the inclusion of a cathedral in the center, but still a vast
hall of Moorish horseshoe arches atop columns stretching into
the distance. At one end of the structure is a gorgeously carved
area denoting the Mihrab, the point of the building aimed at
Mecca and thus in the direction the faithful pray.

Trains
The AVE high speed train links Cordoba with Sevilla (45min) and
Madrid ( 2hrs) The new station opened in 1994 and is located in
the northwest of the city. There are trains to most important
Andalucian cities and Madrid and Barcelona. European and American
rail passes, including EuroRail and Inter Rail are accepted on
the RENFE network, subject to the usual conditions. However on
certain trains there may be a supplement to pay. Ticket machines
for local trains (cercanias) and regional lines are easy to use.
A green flashing light guides you through the instructions printed
on the front of the machine.
Coaches
Coach travel is very popular and very cheap in Andalucia and thanks
to the recent improvement in road can be fast and enjoyable. However,
around the many holidays in the Spanish festive calendar, travelling
can be difficult as the stations are crowded with locals and departures
may be delayed and roads busier than usual. The main coach station
is located near the RENFE train station. It is convenient and
well signed with plenty of ticket windows, an information desk
and a shopping mall.
Cordoba Airport
The local airport to the west is only a small airstrip suitable
for light aircrafts.
Driving
Most of the main roads and highways in Andalucia are very good.
However, due to the rapid expansion of the road infrastructure
in recent years, some of the maps are out of date so be sure to
check the publishing date. Always drive with caution, as the accident
rate is the second highest after Portugal. The worse time of year
is July and August when the roads are packed with holiday makers.
You should always carry your driving licence with you to produce
to police if necessary. Failure to do so can result in a hefty
fine.
City Buses
Buses in Spain are all single decker. Get on at the front and
either pay the driver or punch your ticket in the machine. When
alighting press the button to request your stop and, if the bus
is crowded, remember to give yourself plenty of time to disembark
Taxis
There is not usually much difficulty in finding a taxi when you
need it. They are always white and have a logo on the door which
displays their official number. Learn enough Spanish to explain
where you are going as most drivers won't speak English. The meter
marks up the basic fare, however a supplement may be added after
midnight and during fiestas or public holidays. |

| Museum
Archeological Museum in Cordoba
Situated within the beautiful Renaissance Palace of the Paéz
family, this museum has Iberian, Roman, Visigothic, Muslim,
Mudéjar and Renaissance pieces. The Roman collection
is particularly fascinating.
During its original conversion, this small Renaissance mansion
was revealed as the unlikely site of a genuine Roman patio.
It is now one of the most imaginative and pleasant small museums
in the country with an excellent local collection and a particularly
outstanding inlaid tenth-century bronze stag found at the Moorish
palace of Medina Azahara.
Museum of Fine Arts in Cordoba
This Renaissance building occupies the Hospital de la Caridad,
and houses an excellent collection of works by local artists
and drawings by Valdés, Leal, Zurbarán, Murillo,
Palomino, Antonio del Castillo and Juan de Peñalosa,
among others, as well as sculptures by Juan de Mesa and Mateo
Inurria.
Open from Tuesday until Saturday from 3 pm to 8 pm
Festivities
Cordoba May
Fairs
May is a month of festivities in Cordoba, starting with the
Crosses of May Festival (1st, 2nd and 3rd of May) and then followed
by the Patio Contest (4th to 16th May), in which home-owners
compete for the prize awarded to the most beautifully decorated
patio. The map provided by the local Tourism Office will help
you find the competing courtyards. The Cordoba fair is held
during the last week of May.
Bars & RestaurantsBars
The locally produced wine is predominantly Montilla/Moriles,
which is made in the towns of the same name just south of Cordoba.
It is similar to a dry, light sherry and is available at most
of the local bars, the following being particularly recommended:
Bar Plateros
It's opposite the Hostal Maestre specialises in Montilla and
also has a good selection of tapas. The same chain has another
branch at C/ Deanes 5 near the Mezquita.
Casa Elisa
It's near Puerto del Almodobar, northwest of the Mezquita is
also an excellent tapas bar with lots of atmosphere.
Taberna San Miguel
It's behind the church of the same name, north of Plaza Tendillas.
This is a traditional old Cordoba bar with faded bullfighting
posters, guitars hanging on the walls and where the tapas, particularly
the manitas (trotters) and callos (tripe) are particularly delicious.

There are numerous restaurants
in the city of Cordoba to choose from. Try a menu del dia (menu
of the day) in one of the typical patio restaurants of the city.
Bar-Restaurante Federacion de las Penas
It's C/ Conde y Luque 8. Moorish style patio dining room which
is open to everyone, despite the name. There is a good choice
of economical menu del dia here.
Taberna Santa Clara
Located on the corner of C/ Rey Hercedia. Friendly, good value
cuisine with an attractive outdoor patio for dining al fresco.
Taberna Salinas, C/Tundidores 3, Near the Plaza Corredera. Excellent
food at reasonable prices.
Restaurante La-La-La
It's C/Cruz del Rastro. Strange name, but this restaurant boasts
a great location on the river and is reasonable priced with an
extensive menu.
Restaurant Cafetin Halal
It's C/ Rey Heredia 28. Islamic cultural centre serving excellent,
inexpensive meals with lots of veggie options.
El Churrasco
It's C/ Romero 16. Expensive restaurant with a long standing
reputation for its grilled pork and fish dishes.
Casa Paco Acedo
Situated beneath the ancient Torre de Malmuerta at the north end
of town, this house is particularly noted for its rabo de toro
(bull tail)
Bar Restaurant Milán
Avda Dr. Fleming 14, North west of the Alcázar. Peaceful,
simple restaurant with ceramic tiles lining the walls and tasty
oxtail stew and salmorejo, a thick Cordoban version of gazpacho
with hunks of ham and egg are excellent. |
